Ink and Iron.
Sci-fi that matters.
Something is wrong with men. It’s a feeling, an impression within all of us. Often we can’t name it or point to it, though online everyone else tries to define it for us. Those definitions fall flat. They’re all diagnosis and prescription. But the prescriptions are poison we are being forcefed.
Boys are growing up inside a culture that views their nature with open suspicion and even hostility. Men spend their adult lives in a world that has run out of stories to tell them. Stories that matter and honor the weight they carry, the struggle they endure, the virtues they are still, quietly, trying to live by. Publishing noticed none of this. Or chose not to.
Outlaw Star Press was founded in 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, because we couldn’t find the publisher we needed. So we built one. A home for fiction that takes men seriously. Stories that do not apologize for what they are — bold, purposeful, beautifully written, and unafraid of the ancient truths.
We aren’t reinventing the wheel. Homer wasn’t writing fanfic. He was holding up a mirror to show men what they were capable of becoming. That work is not finished. We are still writing it.
Jason DeGray
Founder · Outlaw Star Press
Jason DeGray has been telling stories his whole life. But it wasn’t an easy journey.
His high school teachers told him not to be a writer. His college professors agreed. His parents pleaded with him not to venture into a life of starving artisanship.
He ignored them all, choosing to learn the hard way — and as such, he spent years living the reality that all those people who discouraged him were right about the hard parts. Rejections. Silence. Self-doubt. Lack of confidence. The slow erosion of a dream against the indifference of an industry that had already decided storytelling should convey a message and propaganda over truth and inspiration. This can, and often does, lead to a dark night of the soul.
“This most of all: ask yourself in the most silent hour of your night: must I write? Dig into yourself for a deep answer. And if this answer rings out in assent, if you meet this solemn question with a strong, simple ‘I must’ then build your life in accordance with this necessity; your whole life, even into its humblest and most indifferent hour, must become a sign and witness to this impulse.”
— Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young PoetThe calling never stops calling. Jason answered “I must.”
His novel The Ruined Man was recognized as a finalist at the NM-AZ Book Awards in 2017. His fourth novel 3VE earned the same recognition in 2022. His most recent work, Those Left Behind, continues a body of fiction marked by its refusal to trade depth for comfort.
In 2025, DeGray founded Outlaw Star Press as a mission of restoration. A publishing home built on the conviction that the stories men need are still worth writing and still worth reading.
